Nirvana, Enrique Iglesias, Janet Jackson, Pussycat Dolls


Nirvana was formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987 by singer Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. On June 15, 1989 through the independent record label Sub Pop, Nirvana released it’s debut album, Bleach. It originally faired poorly, only selling 30,000 copies but the success of their second studio album caused fans to rediscover it. It has since been certified platinum by the RIAA. Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind was released in 1991. The album has been certified ten times platinum and released a number of singles including Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium and Polly. Nirvana subsequently released Incesticide in 1992 and In Utero in 1993. Both albums were certified multiple platinum by the RIAA. Nirvana has sold over 50 million records worldwide,with 25 million records sold in the U.S. alone. Nirvana’s brief run ended with Kurt Cobain’s death in April 1994, when he was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head at his Seattle home. Several Nirvana albums have been released since Kurt Cobain’s death. The first came in November 1994 with the release of the band’s performance for MTV Unplugged, MTV Unplugged in New York. Two weeks after the release of Unplugged in New York, a video compilation of Nirvana performances, titled Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!, was released.

Enrique Iglesias

Better known as Enrique Iglesias, Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler was born on May 8, 1975 in Madrid, Spain. He has dual citizenship in Spain and Maltese. He is the son of singer Julio Iglesias and philipina socialite and magazine journalist Isabel Preysler. In 1995, he released his self titled debut album, Enrique Iglesias. The album has sold more than five million copies worldwide and spawned five hit singles which include Si Tú Te Vas, Experiencia Religiosa, Por Amarte, No Llores Por Mí and Trapecista. In 1997 he released his sophomore album, Vivir. The album has since been certified platinum. On the success of Vivir, Enrique Iglesias released Cosas del Amor, which peaked at number 64 on the Billboard charts. In 1999 he released his debut English album entitled simply Enrique. The album debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 album chart and would go on to be certified Platinum in the United States. The album was a success in Canada too, where it became 8 times Platinum and in Spain 10 times Platinum. Enrique Iglesias has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and holds the record for producing 19 number #1 Spanish–language singles on the Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson was born on May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana but raised in Los Angeles, California. She was the youngest of nine children born to Katherine Scruse and Joseph Jackson. By the time she was a toddler, her five older brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael were performing music at nightclubs and theaters as The Jackson 5. ? late 1980 she joined the cast of Diff’rent Strokes, portraying Charlene Duprey from 1981 to 1982. At age sixteen in 1982, Jackson signed a recording contract with A&M, releasing her self-titled debut album the same year. The album peaked at number sixty-three on the Billboard 200. She followed that with the 1984 release of Dream Street. In 1986, she released her breakthrough album Control. Control peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 album charts and earned a nomination for the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It also produced five hit singles. Since Control Janet Jackson has released seven studio albums. She is ranked by Billboard magazine as one of the top ten best-selling music artists in the history of contemporary music, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide and RIAA lists her as the eleventh best-selling female artist in the United States, with 26 million certified albums.

Pussycat Dolls

The Pussycat Dolls originated in 1995 in Los Angeles, California. The group originated as a burlesque troupe but after receiving national attention, the troupe was re-cast as a music group, comprising lead singer Nicole Scherzinger alongside Melody Thornton, Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt and Carmit Bachar. Their debut album, PCD, was released by A&M Records on September 13, 2005 in the United States. The album was a critical hit and has gone on to sell over seven million units worldwide and spawning 7 singles including “Don’t Cha”, “I Don’t Need a Man” and “Right Now”. From November 2006 – January 2007, the Pussycat Dolls embarked on their PCD World Tour with Rihanna as the opening act. Then in September of 2008 they released their second studio album, Doll Domination. The debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, with 79,000 in first week sales. The Pussycat Dolls have won several Billboard awards including Top-selling R&B/Hip-Hop Single of the Year 2005 and Top Dance/Club Play Single of the Year 2005. They have also received a Grammy nomination in 2007 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal but didn’t win.
